US import told to export himself

ANENDRA SINGH | 26th April 2010

The Hawks have dumped American import Jamil Terrell.

In an exclusive interview with SportToday yesterday, Dennis said the 30-year-old from Georgia became surplus to requirements because he came up short in the job description and was temperamental when it came to coaching the 0800 Easy LPG Hawks.

"We want to win the championship and I feel Jamil's efforts were there, so there's no doubts about that, but we just felt he needed a little bit more," he revealed after a meeting with the Hawks yesterday morning.

Hard decision go with job's territory

It's the part of his job head coach Shawn Dennis loathes.

"It's not pleasant giving that information out and it's the part of coaching I hate the most," Dennis told SportToday.

"Unfortunately, it's just like my territory as a coach - which is only one game away from being fired - so imports walk the same tightrope."

So how did Jamil Terrell react to the news on Saturday?

"Well, he reacted like anyone would when they find out they've lost their job."

The Harbour Heat stay unbeaten defeating the 0800 Easy LPG Bay Hawks 94-82 in Pettigrew Green Arena

The Heat back court of Corey Webster and Kavossy Franklin combined for 44 points giving the Heat their sixth straight win and first on the road.

Rick Rickert (17 points and 10 rebounds) and Webster (24 points) each had seven in the first quarter, Heat leading 25-19 at the end of the first. The Hawks would have a five point lead at the start of the game but that would be the only time they would lead.

Hawks burst Pistons' bubble

ANENDRA SINGH | 10th April 2010

It happens so often in the National Basketball League that it is almost looked on as an entitlement these days.

The defending champions roll into town with that unmistakeable swagger, their arsenal looking worse for wear amid all the media hype about their unblemished record.

Even with key players out through injury or social obligations, they fake, shimmy and nail baskets with ease from the charity line on their way to chalking up back-to-back victories on the road.

Bay players top NBL roster

Paul Trass | 6th April 2010

Are we at the beginning of a new era where Hawke's Bay players will dominate the Hawks NBL playing roster?

For the first time, the two high school teams, St John's College and Hastings Boys' High School, played for the senior open grade championship finals. The teams were surprise finalists, beating teams boasting former national league players in the semifinals.

US import hits ground running... and talking

NO SWEAT: Josh Pace builds a rapport with the Hawks during training last night before Friday's tip-off against the Waikato Pistons in Napier. It's perfect timing," quips basketballer Chris Daniel with a beaming smile as the huge plasma screen TV at the Westshore Inn flashes and booms with American basketball on the ESPN channel.

The 0800 Easy LPG Hawks small forward is perched on a stool in the dimly lit sports bar, but his remark has an air of ambiguity about it.

Injuries to experienced bench forwards former Hawk Puke Lenden and Mike Homik will put the heat on the Waikato Pistons’ starters over the next month.

Lenden and Homik have fractures to their hand and ankle respectively and are set to miss the next month of the National Basketball League.

That means greater pressure on the starters for the two-times defending champion, starting tomorrow when they meet the Bay Hawks at 3pm at the Energy Events Centre in Rotorua.
