Friday night upsets as the Southland Sharks franchise get their first ever win beating the Bay Hawks 85-79 and, after 18 losses, on the trot the Taranaki Mountain Airs beat the Christchurch Cougars 84-62.

Sharks Rene Rougeau top scored with twenty points and Luke Martin in his first game for the franchise scored an efficient 15 also dishing 6 assists.

Breakers guard Kirk Penney has been named in the Australian National Basketball League's All-NBL first team for a third time.

Penney shares top billing in the five-man team with Townsville Crocodiles' point guard Corey Williams, Wollongong Hawks point guard Tywain McKee, plus forwards Mark Worthington (Melbourne Tigers) and Shawn Redhage (Perth).

A boy from a middle-class Pakeha family, David Langrell fancied himself as a tennis player.

Few would have argued with a youngster whose profile was almost a carbon copy of "The Scud", Mark Philippoussis, the former Australian Wimbledon and US Open champion.

Trinity keeps life in balance

It's the trinity of family, faith and friends for Dave Langrell.

"My parents never forced me to go to church and from the age of 10 onwards I didn't. Now I totally do and it's a big part of my life, my Christian values," says the Wellington-born who has lived in Christchurch since he was 9 years old.

So when the Canterbury Rams franchise went down the gurgler in 2007 Langrell took up a teaching job at a high school as well as coaching the Canterbury under-19 team.

NBL returns to Sydney

The National Basketball League is building on the success of the 2009/10 season and will welcome a new team to the league in 2010/11.

Sydney will once again have a team in the National Basketball League, with Basketball Australia announcing today that a club based in the New South Wales capital would be included amongst the nine teams to make up an expanded NBL competition for the 2010/11 season.

After the 49 point performance by Eric Devendorf in round one, Waikato Pistons have another player of the week, Thomas Abercrombie.

37 points (15/20 FG, 2/4 3pt, 5/7 FT), 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 blocks
In the 96-78 win over the Taranaki Mountainairs.

The Airs had no answer for Abercrombie as he shot 75% from the field and blocking an amazing five shots. Abercrombie is fifth place in the player power rankings and his team mate Devendorf leads the rankings after a solid 25 point performance against the Airs as well.
